Thirteen Ways of Looking at Clapotis*

(with apologies to Wallace Stevens)

I.
Among twenty woolen piles
The only finished thing
Was the bias of the Clapotis.

clap1.jpg

II.
I was of three minds
Like a coat rack
On which there are three scarves.

clap2.jpg

III.
The Clapotis whirled in the autumn winds.
It was a small part of the blog ring.

clap3.jpg

IV.
A woman and her stash
Are one.
A woman and her stash and a Clapotis
Are one.

clap4.jpg

V.
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of Noro
Or the beauty of dropped stitches,
The casting off
Or just after.

clap5.jpg

VI.
The project bag emptied
Yard by yard.
The pattern of Clapotis
In its yarn-eating stitch.
The scarf puddled in my lap
swallowed skein after skein.

VII.
O be-sweatered mates of knitters,
Why do you imagine acrylic scarves?
Do you not see how the Clapotis
Wraps around the shoulders
Of the women around you?

clap6.jpg

VIII.
I know Silk Garden
and Kate Gilbert's subtle genius;
But I know, too,
That the Clapotis is involved
In what I know.

clap11.jpg

IX.
When the Clapotis grew to mid size,
It used up
All of my stitch markers.

X.
At the sight of Clapotis
Folding in toward my hair,
Even the crocheters
Would take up Addis.

clap7.jpg

XI.
He rode over Brooklyn
On the Q train.
Once, a fear pierced him,
In that he mistook
The shadow of the Clapotis
For the skyline.

clap8.jpg

XII.
My muffin is eaten.
My Clapotis is becrumbed.

clap9.jpg

XIII.
It was a cafe in a yarn shop.
It was a yarn shop
Inside a cafe.
The knitters sat
In their Clapotis.

How beautiful and fun. I didn't want to make one before, and now I do. Bad. And I don't think there's a higher compliment, do you?

Posted by: Beth

How cool is that! How did you know that I needed a little poetry to end my evening?

Posted by: Dani

That is just awesome! Clapotis is definately on my list of stuff to make. :)

Posted by: Elabeth

That, is freaking BEAUTIFUL! Suits you to a T.. wondering if I could pull off wearing it as you do.. Hmmm..

Posted by: amy

That last picture must be the single best knitting related picture EVER.

Posted by: claudia

Delightful! I felt like I was watching the trailer for a wonderful movie that would make me want to move to NYC, learn to knit, and skip about town with a gorgeous scarf and a great friend. Thanks for a lovely post.

Posted by: Gina

That was awesome! Quell Chic Clapotis!

Posted by: Dana

wOweeEEEE.
What a post. Sigh.

Posted by: valentina

Ahahahahaha! Now I know why you two were giggling like mad women today. LOVE it.

Posted by: Jackie

I'm rather speechless, and my Clapotis is cowering in the corner feeling small and inferior and wondering where it went wrong. This is just damn beautiful, and wins hands down The Best Knit Blog Post. Ever.

Natondi yo.

Posted by: Alison

Silk Garden Clapotis AND Wallace Stevens. I am enchanted.

Posted by: Jenn

Absolutely fabulous! Fantastic pics and brilliant post!

Posted by: froggy

You crack me up!

Posted by: max

Thanks for brightening my Saturday morning. Reading your post over steamy coffee, piano being practiced in the background - a perfect moment!

Posted by: Mary Beth

That was a very creative and wonderful way to show the qualities of Clapotis. It's one of the best post I've seen anywhere. But now that I see how really cool she is I must make her now! Thanks for great inspiration.

Posted by: margene

Brilliant execution, m'dear. Simply inspired.

And props to Mindy for taking such awesome shots yesterday!

Posted by: Em

Very pretty! And great pictures. Looks like you love it!

Playful poetry photographed: pensive, playing, prancing.

Posted by: Annie

Fan-bloody-tastic ! All of it !

Monumental. Epic. Brilliant.

Posted by: mindy

My daughter lives in NYC and I just sent her Clapotis.....she should be on the lookout for others of her kind!!! They are glorious!

Posted by: Mj

Gorgeous!

Posted by: Jeanine

Wow!!
Clapotis is wonderful! And so Noro!
I repeat the earlier questions: how many skeins of Silk Garden? Needle?

You better increase the 'contents' clause of your Homeowners Insurance to cover the value of this recent creation!

I think I saw a Fiesta plate...yours or the cafe's? It is another of my obsessions.

Posted by: pattie

Just brilliant. And beautiful. I love that photo of you and Em -- you look like you're both about to take flight...

Posted by: J Strizzy

dang. now i'm just going to have a clapotis of my very own!

Posted by: laura

Dude.
You rock. That was silly ,and creative beyond words.

Bravo.

(and you two are so cute going down the street together!)

Posted by: Amber

Wow- I love your Clapotis, your poems and your photos. (and your red coat too!) Keep the colours coming!
Which colorway is it?

Posted by: clementine

Oh. My. Goodness. Lovely. Now I want to learn to knit AND have my hair permed...and dyed red.

Posted by: Candy

ah...and i questioned why you hadn't posted in so long! fantastic. just fantastic.

Posted by: rebecca

You are BRILLIANT! I love your poem. My favorite picture is you two running down 14th street with clapotis wings. TOO FUNNY.

Posted by: Illanna

I'm with Candy. I'm going to grown out my hair, have it permed, and dye it red. Then I'm going to knit a clapotis just like yours and frolic with it down my small-town streets while wearing my Doc Martens and a red coat. Then, after they release me from the asylum, I'll do it all over again.

Posted by: Norma

You paid wonderful homage to your beautiful clapotis (did that sound dirty?)

Anyhoo, it's spectacular! Now I have another project to add to my list (right after I finish my 15 UFOs).

Posted by: teresa

Genius! I bow to your poetic and knitterly superiority :)

Posted by: Jen

This is just to much fun! I love the finished Clapotis! Great job.

Posted by: Missy

Brilliant - I'm casting on tonight - and it's midsummer her in NZ.

Posted by: sally

Beautiful Clapotis! Can you please tell me how many skeins of Silk Garden you used, and the needle size required? Thanks so much! Again, your Clapotis is absolutely beautiful!

Posted by: Laurin

AWESOME Cari! It looks great, and the pictures and words are perfect....Now I am slightly wishing I was making mine full size, instead of half size!

Posted by: Kristine

What a wonderful pair of Clapotis (Clapotises?) and a delightful way to show them off!

Posted by: Ann

Brilliant! I was just reading another Blackbird parody last week ("13 Ways of Looking at a Blackberry") in the New Yorker, so this just completes the circle!

Would you allow me to use this "photo poem" in a class next spring? I was planning a poetry parody bit for the end of the semester, and this is just ideal!

BTW--Clapotis is lovely! I've got to make one of these.

Posted by: Anita

What a fabulous post!! Oh & I love Clapotis!!! Beautiful colors!

Posted by: Eilene

Oh my goodness, you and Em, flying down the street. I am so happy right now reading this post.

And this:
My muffin is eaten.
My Clapotis is becrumbed.

ACCK! Hilarious. You are so creative and awesome. Can I go out with you? :)

Posted by: Carrie

I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of you flying in your Clapotis
Or the beauty of your commenters,
Cheering and whistling
FOr just you.

Fabulous, Cari!

So much depends
upon

some dropped stitch
noro

mazed with yarn
ladders

beside the white

beside the white what??? That's as far as I got. (but did you get the noro/wheelbarrow rhyme?) Beautiful wrap, fantastic poetry! Yours, I mean.

Posted by: Alison C

Wow! I just happened upon your blog after googling "Clapotis blog" and yours was the first in my results list. What an awesome post! And I like the idea of using silk garden. Hmmmm....

Posted by: Moni

This girl is cracking me up! I love the post, it brightens up the gloom and doom of finals week for me. I love your clapotis, I'm so impressed with you. My favorite verse is about the stitch markers. Good work!

Posted by: Kay

Your post (as well as your Clapotis) was a beautiful flash of art into my day - thank you!

Posted by: Sara

Such a clever girl - that was lovely!

Posted by: Donna

Have to agree with a previous poster - wasn't really into Clapotis until I saw yours. It's SG #84 isn't it? I'm in the process of knitting a scarf in that and actually had the thought of ripping it and starting over on a Clapotis - but maybe I'll just make another color. Beautiful, wonderful work.

Posted by: Cara

"...Beside the white CHICKENS", of course!!!

Posted by: Miranda II

How inspiring! Such cleverness.

Posted by: Meredith

So much depends on a red clapotis
covered with rain

I've gotta make me one NOW!

Posted by: Megan

the colors you each chose were divine! so well matched :) how many balls DID you use, anyway? sorry it took me so long to find this entry, but it was worth the wait.

Posted by: alice

I love your poem... and your Clapotis! You've inspired me to need more time to knit!

Posted by: pamelamama

My blog is named for a line in a Wallace Stevens poem, the Snowman. You rock my world! I love it when you do this goofy stuff. So cool!

Posted by: Julia

I LOVE it! You have inspired me. How many skeins did you use and how big did you make it? It looks perfect to me and I want one the same size. :)

Posted by: Rae

Oh. My. God. Best blog entry ever. My fingers are itching! I'm suffering from Clapotistartitis!
