(with apologies to Wallace Stevens)
I.
Among twenty woolen piles
The only finished thing
Was the bias of the Clapotis.

II.
I was of three minds
Like a coat rack
On which there are three scarves.

III.
The Clapotis whirled in the autumn winds.
It was a small part of the blog ring.

IV.
A woman and her stash
Are one.
A woman and her stash and a Clapotis
Are one.

V.
I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of Noro
Or the beauty of dropped stitches,
The casting off
Or just after.

VI.
The project bag emptied
Yard by yard.
The pattern of Clapotis
In its yarn-eating stitch.
The scarf puddled in my lap
swallowed skein after skein.
VII.
O be-sweatered mates of knitters,
Why do you imagine acrylic scarves?
Do you not see how the Clapotis
Wraps around the shoulders
Of the women around you?

VIII.
I know Silk Garden
and Kate Gilbert's subtle genius;
But I know, too,
That the Clapotis is involved
In what I know.

IX.
When the Clapotis grew to mid size,
It used up
All of my stitch markers.
X.
At the sight of Clapotis
Folding in toward my hair,
Even the crocheters
Would take up Addis.

XI.
He rode over Brooklyn
On the Q train.
Once, a fear pierced him,
In that he mistook
The shadow of the Clapotis
For the skyline.

XII.
My muffin is eaten.
My Clapotis is becrumbed.

XIII.
It was a cafe in a yarn shop.
It was a yarn shop
Inside a cafe.
The knitters sat
In their Clapotis.

Posted by: BethHow cool is that! How did you know that I needed a little poetry to end my evening?
Posted by: DaniThat is just awesome! Clapotis is definately on my list of stuff to make. :)
Posted by: ElabethThat, is freaking BEAUTIFUL! Suits you to a T.. wondering if I could pull off wearing it as you do.. Hmmm..

Posted by: Mary BethThat was a very creative and wonderful way to show the qualities of Clapotis. It's one of the best post I've seen anywhere. But now that I see how really cool she is I must make her now! Thanks for great inspiration.

Posted by: JeanineWow!!
Clapotis is wonderful! And so Noro!
I repeat the earlier questions: how many skeins of Silk Garden? Needle?
You better increase the 'contents' clause of your Homeowners Insurance to cover the value of this recent creation!
I think I saw a Fiesta plate...yours or the cafe's? It is another of my obsessions.
Posted by: pattieJust brilliant. And beautiful. I love that photo of you and Em -- you look like you're both about to take flight...
Posted by: J Strizzydang. now i'm just going to have a clapotis of my very own!
Posted by: lauraDude.
You rock. That was silly ,and creative beyond words.

(and you two are so cute going down the street together!)
Posted by: AmberWow- I love your Clapotis, your poems and your photos. (and your red coat too!) Keep the colours coming!
Which colorway is it?
Oh. My. Goodness. Lovely. Now I want to learn to knit AND have my hair permed...and dyed red.
Posted by: Candyah...and i questioned why you hadn't posted in so long! fantastic. just fantastic.
Posted by: rebeccaYou are BRILLIANT! I love your poem. My favorite picture is you two running down 14th street with clapotis wings. TOO FUNNY.
Posted by: IllannaI'm with Candy. I'm going to grown out my hair, have it permed, and dye it red. Then I'm going to knit a clapotis just like yours and frolic with it down my small-town streets while wearing my Doc Martens and a red coat. Then, after they release me from the asylum, I'll do it all over again.
Posted by: NormaYou paid wonderful homage to your beautiful clapotis (did that sound dirty?)
Anyhoo, it's spectacular! Now I have another project to add to my list (right after I finish my 15 UFOs).
Posted by: teresaGenius! I bow to your poetic and knitterly superiority :)
Posted by: JenThis is just to much fun! I love the finished Clapotis! Great job.
Posted by: MissyBrilliant - I'm casting on tonight - and it's midsummer her in NZ.
Beautiful Clapotis! Can you please tell me how many skeins of Silk Garden you used, and the needle size required? Thanks so much! Again, your Clapotis is absolutely beautiful!
Posted by: LaurinAWESOME Cari! It looks great, and the pictures and words are perfect....Now I am slightly wishing I was making mine full size, instead of half size!
Posted by: KristineWhat a wonderful pair of Clapotis (Clapotises?) and a delightful way to show them off!
Posted by: AnnBrilliant! I was just reading another Blackbird parody last week ("13 Ways of Looking at a Blackberry") in the New Yorker, so this just completes the circle!
Would you allow me to use this "photo poem" in a class next spring? I was planning a poetry parody bit for the end of the semester, and this is just ideal!
BTW--Clapotis is lovely! I've got to make one of these.
Posted by: AnitaWhat a fabulous post!! Oh & I love Clapotis!!! Beautiful colors!
Posted by: EileneOh my goodness, you and Em, flying down the street. I am so happy right now reading this post.
And this:
My muffin is eaten.
My Clapotis is becrumbed.
ACCK! Hilarious. You are so creative and awesome. Can I go out with you? :)
Posted by: CarrieI do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of you flying in your Clapotis
Or the beauty of your commenters,
Cheering and whistling
FOr just you.
Fabulous, Cari!
So much depends
upon
some dropped stitch
noro
mazed with yarn
ladders
beside the white
beside the white what??? That's as far as I got. (but did you get the noro/wheelbarrow rhyme?) Beautiful wrap, fantastic poetry! Yours, I mean.
Wow! I just happened upon your blog after googling "Clapotis blog" and yours was the first in my results list. What an awesome post! And I like the idea of using silk garden. Hmmmm....

Posted by: SaraSuch a clever girl - that was lovely!
Posted by: DonnaHave to agree with a previous poster - wasn't really into Clapotis until I saw yours. It's SG #84 isn't it? I'm in the process of knitting a scarf in that and actually had the thought of ripping it and starting over on a Clapotis - but maybe I'll just make another color. Beautiful, wonderful work.
Posted by: CaraHow inspiring! Such cleverness.
Posted by: Merediththe colors you each chose were divine! so well matched :) how many balls DID you use, anyway? sorry it took me so long to find this entry, but it was worth the wait.
